Offering Dog Behaviour Consultations in North Tyneside and surrounding areas

What is a behaviourist, and why do I need one?

Many pet dogs will develop a behaviour issue at some point in their lifetime. Perhaps they start barking at other dogs when out on walks, or showing shows of anxiety when left home alone. It can make life with our faithful friends more difficult and negatively impact upon our relationship with them. But as frustrating as it can be, changes in our dog's behaviour is their way of telling us that something isn't quite right with how they're feeling. Something is compromising their well-being, and they need help in coping with that something.

Behaviourists work with dogs and their owners to address specific behaviour issues by exploring their underlying causes and formulating a suitable plan to help the dog both cope with their internal feelings and change their outward behaviour. The aim is to improve the living situation and well-being of both the dog and their human family members.

Jen Cage has worked as a pet dog behaviourist since 2015, and has successfully helped hundreds of dogs and their owners get their relationship back on track. From a toolbox of kind science-based techniques, Jen creates bespoke therapy and training plans tailored to each individual's needs.

About Jen

Hello! I'm Jen, and I've been working as a pet dog trainer and behaviourist for nearly a decade now. I graduated from Newcastle University with a Masters degree in Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare in 2016, after completing my thesis exploring potential biological influences on pet dog behaviour. I've previously worked as a veterinary nurse and dog walker, and have around 15 years of professional dog handling and training experience, as well as good general knowledge of pet dog health. I have various animal care-related certificates such as canine nutrition and first aid. I also have a certificate in Pet Bereavement Support from Blue Cross.

I've always loved animals, particularly dogs, and behaviour work comes very naturally to me. I enjoy talking to people about their pets, and I'm an avid problem-solver. Through my work, I can help people in improving their lives and that of their dog's, which gives me a real sense of joy. I'm especially interested in cases involving on-lead reactivity, a common issue that hits close to home due to one of my own dogs developing anxiety on walks after a prolonged period of illness.

I currently have five dogs in my family, four of which are flat-coated retrievers. The fifth is cocker spaniel Bliss, aka my best friend in the whole world. I love creatures great and small, so I also own two geckos and a snake, and would love a tarantula too! When I'm not doing doggy-related things, I enjoy reading and learning new things, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, and taking long drives to explore new places with Bliss.
